Analyzing the perfect evolution of Super Junior; the real all-rounded idols

nalyzing the perfect evolution of Super Junior; the real all-rounded idols

(T/N: This article is mainly about SJ-M and how SuJu, as a whole and its sub-unit, managed to have much success in China. Hence the source, and the slightly misleading header)

There has never been a Korean boyband like Super Junior, who has so thoroughly infiltrated your life before: you turn on the television and you will see their CFs on any channel.

According to the latest from China News, the number of products that Super Junior is currently endorsing is five. For a foreign boyband, they have already broken all records for foreign endorsers in China.

When you see them on the news as frequently as local boybands Fahrenheit and Lollipop, do you not think: how did they manage to sweep across the whole of China and mesmerize it?

Ten years ago, H.O.T started the boyband wave in China, and let them know the prowess of Korean boybands then. After that, both Shinhwa and Dong Bang Shin Ki continued the hallyu wave in China, becoming the idols that everyone strived to emulate.

If one had to say who is currently the most popular boyband in China, it has to be the extremely large roundup called Super Junior. Furthermore, the sub-unit SJ-M with Hankyung as its leader has won the hearts of many teenage girls in China.

They have opened up a new route for Korean stars in the Mainland.

Super Junior: the real all-rounded idols

After the successes of artistes such as H.O.T, Shinhwa, Dong Bang Shin Ki and BoA under its wing, the largest entertainment company in Korea, S.M Entertainment then started planning for a refreshing new group for fans.

On the 6th of November 2005, S.M Entertainment officially introduced their new boyband, a thirteen member group consisting of “flower boys”.

This was an important step towards the overseas market for S.M, and the sheer number of people in Super Junior already generated much attention that was needed for the group.

Talents are all-rounded; they’re not only singers

What made Super Junior stand out from the other boybands at that time was that they were comprised of thirteen members that specialized in different areas. They were singers, actors, comedians, composers, models and MCs (Master of Ceremonies, used here to refer to host/singers).

Once they had debuted, all thirteen members had the chance to showcase their own special talent.

One special, Chinese face

In this massive group however, one face stands out and is particularly striking. He is the Chinese member Hankyung (or Hangeng) that was picked via the H.O.T auditions in China during the 2001 edition. He is tall and handsome, and has vast talent in dancing.

Because of his appearance, Super Junior was destined to shine in the Chinese market.

From their first single, Super Junior’s road of fame has been relatively smooth. All of their lead singles from every one of their three albums have been chart-toppers, and they also have had two concert tours around Asia, causing a frenzy everywhere they toured. The members also have had good results in both hosting and acting as well.

Earlier this month, Super Junior appeared as guests for the Golden Melody Awards in Taiwan, and they were ironically more popular than most of the other guests there. Their fans had been mobbing them ever since their touchdown in Taiwan, and they would not cease until SuJu’s departure.

Their popularity even led to the organizing unit specially planning a small copycat version of Super Junior, for more news coverage.

Super Junior-M: the China-focused Korean boyband

Because of Hankyung, more Chinese people now know about and like Super Junior. So at this point of time, S.M made an analytical business decision, and a risky one too: they created a sub-unit within Super Junior, just for the Chinese market.

With Hankyung as its leader, more Chinese members were added in and this is how the mesmerizing SJ-M has come to be.

The group with three Chinese members

The M in SJ-M stands for “Mandarin”, and it also represents that SJ-M will be focusing on the Chinese market as their main stage. Its members comprises of Hankyung, the leader and also the one with the highest popularity in China, Donghae, Siwon, Ryeowook, Kyuhyun, four members from the original unit, two Chinese members were also added: Henry and Zhoumi.

Together they form the seven member SJ-M, and the presence of three Chinese members brings a stronger sense of familiarity for Chinese fans. They are the first boyband to have both Korean and Chinese members, and they are also the first group to train under a Korean entertainment company and enter the Chinese market with the intention of working hard to achieve their goal of being top stars there.

Chinese versions help to close the gap

The truth remains that despite the hallyu wave in China, there is not a shortage of boybands and pretty boys there, all with the ability to sing and dance well. However, SJ-M’s appearance still managed to wow the audience there.

SJ-M’s debut album’s lead single, , was the Chinese remake of the original Korean version that Super Junior had sung, and most of the Asian audience were already familiar with this song. It was rearranged by famed Korean composer Yoo Youngjin to include a New Jazz swing beat, and is more emotional than the original version.

The single that shared the same name with the album, , was a light rock dance song that featured an acoustic guitar together with their sweet vocals, bringing a sense of happiness to all that listened to it.

The cute was written by Zhoumi, who also rewrote the Chinese lyrics for , and , showcasing his lyrical ability.

In order to pull the gap between them and their fans even closer, this Korean-Chinese group even did a cover of the classic Chinese ballad, .

SJM Launches Into The Chinese Advertisement Industry

SJM, who is mostly active in China, recently signed contrasts with 5 Chinese brands, becoming the blue chips in the Chinese advertisement industry. [TN: A blue chip stock is the stock of a well-established company having stable earnings and no extensive liabilities.]

At the end of June, SJM signed contracts with "OPPO", representing the new "OPPO" 3G cellphone that will be released this fall. SJM, as China's most welcome popular group [TN: HECK YES ^^], are Chinese youth's favorite idols, so they are well suited for being "OPPO"s New Wave models.

SJM isn't just representing cellphones in advertisements, but also representing world-famous brand Pepsi, Chinese casual brand "Semir", home appliances, cosmetics, foods, etc. SJM, who won "Best Group award" at the end of last year, once again proves their unbeatable popularity.

Also, Hangeng did solo representing for "Zheng Shi Ming" and "Shuai Jin Wei". After "Zheng Shi Ming" signed Hangeng, sales have increased by 30%. [TN: Zheng Shi Ming is eyedrops, and Shuai Jin Wei is shoes. Click each name for links to CF, and LOL wow Hangeng is pretty sales-inducing, neh? XD]

Super Junior will also be holding the "Super Junior ASIA TOUR CONCERT SUPER SHOW II" at Seoul's Olympic Stadium from July 17-19. [TN: Seems totally random. =.=;;]

SJM Are The New Model For OPPO (edited)

[ translator’s note: direct translation of "O rui shi li" = “O sharp power” ]

Recently the digital fashion domain’s well-known brand OPPO mobile phone has already signed the Asian idol super group SJ-M and officially launches its yearly all round collaborations. After adding young, fashionable and international elements full of vitality, all efforts are being used to create the OPPO brand’s new style “O rui shi li”. What kind of expectations and pleasant surprises will it bring to everyone?

Besides shooting many styles of print advertisements and television commercials to let the audience see SJ-M’s “O rui shi li” all new image and performance, the collaboration this time includes a series of in-depth collaborations – including city concerts and zero distance internet interactive activities. Previously unimagined “face to face idol moments” are right by your side!

Idol super group SJ-M are music idols who are really liked by young people presently and at the same time they are the entertainment trend’s new power [ translator’s note: power = shi li, which is also used in “O rui shi li” ]. Further, within the digital consumer domain OPPO’s brand is the industry’s fashion benchmark. Amongst young people, these two both have very strong appeal. This time SJ-M joins “O rui shi li” which is set up by OPPO and represents the energy of OPPO mobile phone’s fashion trend “sharpness that cannot be resisted”. It is the same situation as SJ-M’s “sharp spearhead” of development in Asia. In order to promote the concept of fashion communication lifestyle advocated by the OPPO brand, the superstar idols in “O rui shi li” will appear even more frequently before the audience to share together OPPO mobile phone’s cutting edge mobile digital concept. In the second half of 2009, OPPO mobile phone will present to consumers even more brilliant, fashionable and new styles of mobile phones and promotional activities, which create a comprehensive and rich mobile digital experience.

Many young people regard the pursuit of music, adoration of idols and dreams of life like a treasured mirror image of youth. Through in-depth interactive activities, illusion “O rui shi li” will encourage everyone to go and discover and treasure everything in life that is most truly beautiful. It will even build the “stairway of dreams” to help participants realize their dreams and to pursue the most genuine.

The first collection of print advertisement photographs are already being planned and prepared. And in early August, there will be a concert hosted by OPPO mobile phone for SJ-M. All tickets are currently not for public sale. Attending the venue in person? Sweet interactions? For even more “O rui shi li” action plans, pay close attention to http://www.oppo.com when the time comes.

SJM 2nd album released in the 2nd half of the year

Long time not share bout SJM
so I'm sharing this article^^
and this is really long article XDDD
Original source: sohu.com

On 30 April at the University of Science and Technology Beijing, SJ-M participated in Sohu’s song meeting and were interviewed exclusively by Sohu’s Celebrities Online. After debuting one year ago, how many marks would they give themselves for their development? Also, what have they been busy with recently? Next Tuesday, Sohu’s Celebrities Online will release a video special; the images and details are presented here first.

SJ-M’s recent movements
Hangeng: It’s already been a very long time since we’ve greeted our Chinese fans, everyone’s Chinese has gotten a lot better as well. (Handing over to Ryeowook, everyone in turn says their greetings in Chinese)

Sohu: There’s been a period of time that you haven’t had activities in China. Firstly, congratulations for SJ’s 3rd album that has recently gained excellent results in Korea. Do SJ-M need to have new activities as well?

Hangeng: Recently we’ve been continuously doing activities in Korea promoting our 3rd album “Sorry Sorry”. For the results that we have gained up to now, we are very grateful to our company and the staff that worked hard on this album and our manager. During this time of activity, our SJ-M has also recorded new songs, the new 2nd SJ-M album will be released most likely in the second half of the year.

Sohu: In our special SJ thread there was a poll, do you guys know which three song from SJ-M’s previous album were the most popular?

Zhoumi: I’ll guess! Because it’s already been one year since activities for the 1st album… “At least there’s still you”, “Love you, love you” and “U”, as well as “Mi”. I’ll guess “At least there’s still you” first, “U” and also “Love you, love you”. (Note: Correct answer is “U”, “At least there’s still you” and “Mi”. Guessed very accurately!)

Sohu: When is SJ-M’s second album planned to be released? From image to song style, will there be an overturning change? This time will there be any adaptations of songs from SJ’s 3rd album? Will you continue to do covers of Chinese songs?

Kyuhyun: This time the new album will be the same as SJ-M’s first album; all the songs will be sung in Chinese. We have already begun production of this album, even though it is still not clear when it will be released, but I believe it will be an outstanding piece of work like the 1st album. Recently we’re also earnestly learning to compose songs; I believe the new album this time will definitely include very nice songs.

Sohu: On 8 April last year SJ-M announced its debut, at that time you guys wanted to be China’s top group, indeed, in this year we’ve seen your results as well as sincerity, if being the “top group” is 100 marks, how many marks do you guys give for what you’ve done up until now? Which areas are there regrets? Or, if looking backwards, what could have been done better at the time?

Siwon: We can’t really be definite in giving marks. In the past year everyone’s support for SJ-M has touched us very much. So this year we will continue to work hard with activities, I hope everyone will continue to follow us closely.

Kyuhyun: If it is now, then I feel that 50 marks should be about right, even though we don’t know how long we have to wait until we get 100 marks, but we will always work hard up to that day.

Sohu: Last year SJ-M had frequent activities in China and accumulated very high popularity, as well as gaining some affirmation from music awards, then what is the new target that you want to reach this year?

Donghae: Last year we gained lots of awards, which greatly ourselves, this year we will continue to work hard and also hope that we are able to participate in as many music award ceremonies as last year. So I hope everyone will continue to support us like before.

Sohu: It’s been one year since debut, you must also have some understanding of the Chinese entertainment environment, as opposed to China’s other boy groups, what is the biggest advantage and feature of SJ-M?

Hangeng: I feel that each group has their own strengths, it should be learning from each other and competing with each other, only that way will there be even better groups to be able to ascend the China’s music world’s flight of stairs step by step, so it’s a period of learning from each other. Our feature is that we mainly have foreign members, English, Korean, Japanese, Thai – sawasdee ka… [ translator’s note: “hello” in Thai ] I know a little too. (Laugh) From every singer in China there is something that can be learnt.

SJ-M’s Seven Rumours
During the time SJ-M left the Chinese audience’s line of sight, there were seven rumours that we want to seek personal confirmation.

Rumour 1: Zhoumi.
19 April, Zhoumi has just had his 23rd birthday, the message you left for fans was “every tiny action from you all brings me even more courage and confidence”. Is this true? Can you tell us specifically what actions of the fans have touched you the most?

Zhoumi: I’m trapped (laugh). What’s touched me the most are the messages fans have left for me on the internet, it’s been one year since my debut until now, I remember very clearly being interviewed on Sohu... that big camera lens. I can’t specifically say on which particulars, but their applause and the expression in their eyes all stay within my memory. That is the greatest support and acknowledgement for me. If it wasn’t for their small actions, then I wouldn’t be standing before everyone now with confidence and courage.

Rumour 2: Henry.
During this time you secretly disappeared, what were you doing?

Henry: In Korea – sleeping (laugh). After our SJ-M activities finished, a big part of my time was spent in Korea. A lot of that time was training, practicing singing, practicing dancing and I was going to class every day and learning Chinese in Korea. I went everyday to classes that were like extra tuition.

Hangeng: Didn’t you also go back to Canada?

Henry: Ah! Right, right, right… I went back to Canada to see my family. That’s it.

Hangeng: Henry said he hadn’t seen his family for a very long time so he took a month to go back home and visit his relatives and to be together with his family so he could spend time with them.

Rumour 3: Siwon.

There is a Korean-Japanese movie adaptation of the Japanese manga “Kuroshitsuji” [ translator’s note: Black Butler ] and it has already been confirmed that Siwon will be the lead?
Siwon: It hasn’t been confirmed that I’ll be the lead yet, it’s still at the discussion phase now. Besides “Kuroshitsuji”, there are also other movies that are being considered at the moment. I believe it won’t be long before I use the identity of ‘actor Choi Siwon’ to appear before everyone.

Rumour 4: Hangeng.
You wish to participate in the third season of “Ugly Wu Di”? [ translator’s note: this is the Chinese equivalent of “Ugly Betty” ]

Hangeng: Actually this news I sort of found out on the internet, if the company confirms it they will tell me. I’m doing Super Junior activities now, if this happens, the company will notify me. Personally, I also hope to be able to participate in dramas.

Sohu: With “Liu Xing Yu” [ translator’s note: “Meteor Rain” is China’s version of “Boys Over Flowers”, not to be confused with the F4 drama of the same English name ], your chances in the final selection for F4 were really big, why did you ultimately not appear in the drama?

Hangeng: I’ve heard of that being said as well. But when the actors for “Liu Xing Hua Yuan” [ translator’s note: “Meteor Garden” is the Taiwan version of “Boys Over Flowers” and is the name often used in Chinese when referring to “Boys Over Flowers” ] were being selected, it was exactly at the time that SJ was recording its new album. Actually it has already been more than a year since I’ve been together with the members of SJ, working together and going on stage together, so I felt that the 3rd album was very important. So it’s most important to be together with the members.

Rumour 5: Kyuhyun.
Recently in Korea SJ has appeared on many shows, Kyuhyun displayed your extraordinary singing abilities again, on “Yoo Youngsuk's 20th Anniversary Album” you did a cover of a song called “Seven years of love”, can you sing a bit of it for us now?

Kyuhyun: In our new album there is a song, “Shining Star”, which was composed for us by Yoo Youngsuk songbei, I got to meet Yoo Youngsuk songbei through this opportunity, afterwards I was invited by Yoo Youngsuk songbei to participate in the recording of his new album. In relation to singing, Yoo Youngsuk songbei told me that no matter where you are interviewed, it is enough to sing only five Korean Won worth of the song, so I’ll sing an amount of five Korean Won then. The remaining part will have to be left for next time for me to sing to everyone.

Rumour 6: Ryeowook.
Through SJ’s third album activities we have discovered the birth of a new lover of culinary skills and that is Ryeowook. When being interviewed by us a few days ago, Ryeowook said that he really missed China’s buns. What kind of reference is that?

Ryeowook: When I returned to Korea I missed China and when I came to China I missed Korea, but China’s buns are also really very tasty. In the group the others have had huge improvements in their singing, but it seems that only I have had great improvements in my culinary skills. I hope there will be the opportunity for fans to try Chinese cuisine personally made by me.

Rumour 7: Donghae.
Your Korean minihompy name is “Kim Hyangsuk”, (it’s a female name) why?

Donghae: (Chinese) That is my mother’s name… because… (how do you say it! Asks Hangeng)

Hangeng: You should just use Korean to say it.

Donghae: I really want to show off my Chinese.

Donghae: Previously I used my own name for my personal home page, but hackers stole the password so I had to borrow my mother’s home page to interact with fans. I hope everyone will come to my Cyworld (last phrase in Chinese).

About the song meeting
Sohu: Today the performance is being held at the University of Science and Technology Beijing, are there any differences performing in school grounds and normal performances? When facing students are you more nervous? When specifically targeting university students, will you have any special preparations?

Hangeng: Actually this is the first time SJ-M has come to perform at a university, once I came into the school it felt very friendly and made me think of my time before studying at the College of International Education Central University for Nationalities. In the car Zhoumi said that going to school was really fun. So it’s very friendly and being together with university students, interacting face to face, brings up lots of previous memories.

Hangeng: To Sohu’s netizens, thank you everyone for the support shown to SJ-M all along, in this year that everyone has accompanied SJ-M. I hope our next album will give everyone a pleasant surprise. I hope everyone will be healthy, continue to support us, we will continue to work hard. We are SJ-M!
